HyperX claims its Cloud Alpha Wireless gaming headset offers 300 hours of battery life, which sounds like over-the-top marketing hype, but actually turns out to be true.
When the majority of wireless headphones are claiming battery life in the 20-50 hour range, it's hard to believe any company could suddenly jump to 300 hours, especially for a headset that only costs $200(Opens in a new window). Hardware teardown specialist iFixit was asked if it was actually true, and if so, how HyperX had achieved such a feat. Sure enough, the explanation was forthcoming in the video below:
No lights on the exterior and a generous 5.55Wh battery inside are a good start for offering plenty of battery life, but it's the power draw where HyperX really impresses. Where as other headsets draw anywhere from 7-26 milliamps (with wild fluctuations), the Cloud Alpha Wireless needs just 4.45 milliamps. iFixit concludes that under ideal conditions you'd get over 330 hours of use before the battery is completely drained.
It's the clever combination of components that keep the power requirements so low. HyperX used a number of ultra-low power parts including a Kinetis KL27 ARM Cortex M0+, NXP power management chip, 2.4GHz Bluetooth Low Energy Transceiver, and a Dialog Semiconductor DA7212 Stereo Audio Codec, which has exceptionally low power consumption(Opens in a new window).
HyperX really did set the bar higher with this headset and should be commended for doing so. In PCMag's review, we found the Cloud Alpha Wireless to be an excellent gaming headset with a powerful crisp sound, but a headset primarily suited for use with a PC.
