Heart Machine, the studio behind Hyper Light Drifter, has revealed that the next game in the series, Hyper Light Breaker, will be coming to PC as an early access title this summer, as reported by IGN. The game acts as a prequel to Hyper Light Drifter, and will put players in the shoes of multiple different characters.
In a departure from the general structure of Hyper Light Drifter, Hyper Light Breaker will instead make use of rogue-lite mechanics. The game is also separating itself from its predecessor by being a 3D action title rather than using the original’s top-down camera angle.
Originally announced back in March 2022, Hyper Light Breaker has seen quite a few trailers leading up to its originally-planned Spring 2023 release window. The game has since seen a couple of more delays, first to Fall 2023, and then to an unannounced window, which has now been revealed as Summer 2024.
Hyper Light Breaker is slated to feature “infinite open worlds” as well as various loadouts, giving players several options in how they might want to tackle its challenges. The game pits players against the Abyss King as they journey through the world of Overgrowth.
