While The Hunger Games movies remained relatively consistent with the books, details such as the death of Thresh, have caused confusion. With many characters, their deaths came as expected by readers, and the manner in which they died was clear. However, in the case of Thresh, the books and the movies seem to be telling different stories.
The first installment of The Hunger Games book series was released in 2008, and by 2012 Suzanne Collins had already helped to adapt her novel into a movie of the same name. The story follows Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence), a young girl living in a dystopian reality where 24 children are selected each year to compete in a vicious fight to the death known as The Hunger Games. Although Katniss manages to survive, other tributes — such as Thresh — are not so lucky.

Representing District 11, Thresh is the epitome of strength and power, and because of this, he is approached by a group of Tributes known as the Career Pack. After turning down their offer of an alliance, Thresh is seen as a threat by the Careers and their leader Cato. He survives the majority of The Hunger Games, before being killed with only a few tributes remaining, but the manner in which he dies is portrayed differently in the books and movies.
Although the books do not directly reveal the cause of Thresh’ death, Katniss assumes he has been killed by Cato. After Katniss runs into him at the Cornucopia, he saves her from Clove and takes Cato’s backpack.
