There are a few steps to getting Smooth Stone Slab in. You should already have a Furnace (made by using any eight types of stones) and three Cobblestones.

Sticks are fairly easy to obtain in, as you only need two wood planks. The two wood planks can be from any tree and can be acquired by using an ax or your character's bare hands. Once you have two pieces of wood, you simply need to place them on top of each other in the crafting table grid to produce four Sticks.
