Players will regularly need these items to upgrade Modules and Masterwork materials as well as obtain items, such as Trials Passages. Additionally, players will need to collect Legendary Shards to infuse gear. Players will primarily obtain Legendary Shards by dismantling gear with either a Legendary or Exotic rarity.
The best method for experienced players to earn Legendary Shards in Destiny 2 is by clearing out their Vault. As players progress through the game, they may store weapons and gear in their Vault for later use, only to never return for these items. Each piece of armor or weapon can be exchanged for three Legendary Shards. Furthermore, players will be able to earn four Legendary Shards for each piece of armor or weapon if they are of high enough rank and purchase the Season Pass.

When clearing their Vault, players should prioritize any duplicate gear or weapons as well as any item that cannot be infused past the 1,350 cap. Because the power of weapons in Destiny 2 from prior seasons is capped, they are unlikely to be useful for late-game content or future seasons, making them excellent fodder for Legendary Shards. Additionally, huge stacks of Legendary Shaders or Gunsmith Materials can easily be turned into Legendary Shards.
Another method players can use to obtain Legendary Shards is redeeming vendor packages. Specifically, tower venders will grant players rewards as they increase their rank, and for each increase in rank players will receive a Legendary Engram from each individual vendor.
