Although Grand Theft Auto remains extremely successful as a franchise, the release of GTA: The Trilogy — The Definitive Edition has gone down as one of the most maligned video game releases in recent history. Despite early enthusiasm for the return of some of the franchise's beloved past titles, the rollout of the trilogy was rife with problems. In fact, the result was such a media mess that Rockstar lost some standing with longtime fans.
Hype for theGTA Trilogy remasters was considerable, with GTA 3, Vice City, and San Andreas being some of the most acclaimed games of all time. Unfortunately, it came nowhere close to living up to the hype. Rockstar's games are known for their polish, but GTA: The Trilogy shipped with numerous glitches and bugs similar to Cyberpunk 2077. Many players also took issue with the visuals of the remasters, with the 3D universe GTA games taking on a weird new dimension with HD graphics to the extent that memes mocking the GTA Trilogy's graphics took off following its launch. However, there were other issues present as well, such as failing to capitalize on the hype for the games, as well as not responding to the controversy as efficiently as they needed to.

There are some lessons that can be taken from the debacle of the GTA Trilogy release, many of which Rockstar and Take-Two would do well to remember. It is a story of an anticipated gaming event that turned into a public relations disaster. Now the launch is a part of gaming history, albeit not in the way Rockstar would have wanted.
