Friday the 13th Part 8: Jason Takes Manhattan is not generally remembered fondly, but it features a secret satisfying fight between two actors who have donned the Jason Voorhees mask. Part 8 was billed as a departure from the Friday the 13th formula, taking Jason out of Crystal Lake and letting him loose in the Big Apple. However, the movie was working with a small budget and could not afford to fully take place in New York, and so the movie was instead primarily set on a cruise ship bound for the city, with the last act taking place in Vancouver dressed up like Manhattan. Part 8 was critically panned, but one of the main standouts was Kane Hodder as Jason, returning to the franchise after playing Voorhees in Part 7.
Kane Hodder would go on to play Jason two more times in Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday and the misguided Jason X before losing the chance to continue to play the role in Freddy vs. Jason. Hodder is still the fan-favorite Jason. He injected life into the silent killer, giving him memorable physical attributes like his full-bodied deep breaths and jerky head movements, and he stood out from the other actors who have played the hockey mask-wearing villain. It came as a surprise that Hodder was not chosen to play Jason in Freddy vs. Jason, director Ronny Yu cast stuntman Ken Kirzinger instead because Kirzinger's height would contrast Jason even more with Robert Englund's Freddy Krueger.
