Obi-Wan Kenobi star Hayden Christensen ponders the question of how Darth Vader’s children could’ve saved him sooner. 1977’s Star Wars: A New Hope introduced audiences to franchise antagonist Darth Vader and protagonist Luke Skywalker—the Force-sensitive farm boy destined to defy an empire. In that first film, Obi-Wan “Ben” Kenobi tells Luke that Vader killed his father, Anakin Skywalker. 1980’s The Empire Strikes Back dropped the bombshell that Vader was, in fact, Luke's father before Return of the Jedi (1983) revealed that Vader was a father of two, with Leia Organa being Luke’s secret sister.
16 years after George Lucas’ original trilogy, the prequels explored the fall of the Republic and the rise of Vader. Following Jake Lloyd’s adolescent Anakin in The Phantom Menace, Christensen played Obi-Wan’s impulsive Padawan as he takes issue with the dogmatic Jedi Order and romances Padmé Amidala in Attack of the Clones (2002). In Revenge of the Sith (2005), Anakin falls to the dark side, kills younglings, fights his former mentor, and has an unfortunate encounter with some lava—which results in him becoming more machine than man. That movie ends with Vader believing Padmé died before giving birth to Leia and Luke, the latter of which is responsible for Anakin’s redemption decades later.

When asked whether he thinks Vader could’ve been saved before Return of the Jedi had he known about his kids sooner, Christensen turned the question back to the interviewer.
