In the recently released art book for The Batman, Catwoman actor Zoë Kravitz describes the pressure she felt from the legacy of past actors who portrayed the classic character and how it influenced her performance. Kravitz stars as Selina Kyle in the latest Batman film, which centers on the titular hero as he attempts to solve a series of crimes perpetrated by the mysterious Riddler. Kyle finds herself mixed up in the case when Batman's (Robert Pattinson) investigation leads him to the crime boss Carmine Falcone (John Turturro), the target of Kyle's latest con. The Batman proved to be a huge hit at the box office and garnered near-universal critical acclaim, with praise for Kravitz's portrayal of Catwoman.
Kravitz is the latest actor to play the anti-hero in live-action media, following a long line of talented actors before her. The Adam West-led Batman in the 1960s saw Catwoman portrayed by three separate actors: Julie Newmar and Eartha Kitt took the role in the popular show and Lee Meriwether played Kyle in the film adaptation of the series. The character didn't appear in live-action again until 1992, this time with Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman in Tim Burton's Batman Returns. Halle Berry took her turn as Kyle in the 2004 flop Catwoman and Anne Hathaway donned the leather catsuit for the final film in the Christopher Nolan Batman film trilogy, The Dark Knight Rises. Camren Bicondova was given the role of a young Selina Kyle in the television series Gotham, a show that followed James Gordon and the Gotham City Police Department before Batman took to the streets.
