Batgirl directors reveal how they drew inspiration from Batman: The Animated Series for their movie. The new Warner Bros. DCEU movie marks the first cinematic project centered on Barbara Gordon's caped superhero. Over the years, the character has made several live-action appearances, including in Adam West's Batman TV series, the 1997 Batman & Robin movie, and most recently, the DC TV show Titans. A solo-film has been long overdue, however, and finally is on track to premiere later this year as an HBO Max Original.
Work on a solo Batgirl DCEU movie kicked off in 2017. At that time, Joss Whedon was writing, directing, and producing the project, but he left in 2018, paving the way for Birds of Prey and The Flash scribe Christina Hodson to jump on board as the new screenwriter. Shortly afterward, WB also hired Bad Boys for Life duo Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah to direct the movie. Plot details for Batgirl remain slim, but reports suggest that it will serve as an origin story for Barbara Gordon, who is being played by In The Heights' Leslie Grace. Earlier this year, the official look at Grace's Batgirl costume was revealed, and now El Arbi and Fallah have revealed some interesting inspirations for the character.

While promoting their upcoming series Ms. Marvel on Beyond The Trailer, El Arbi and Fallah explain how the MCU show is different from Batgirl. They talk about the latter's grittier tone, emphasizing that it authentically captures Gotham's dark vibe. During the discussion, the directors also reveal that their live-action Barbara Gordon is heavily inspired by Batgirl from Batman: The Animated Series, the show which aired on Fox Kids between 1992 and 1995.
