A new art commission from Chris Mooneyham depicts a scene between Batgirl and Poison Ivy, and the confrontation provides a look at what a potential Birds of Prey series could be. The team has been largely absent from DC Comics of late, meaning the team is more primed than ever for a comeback.
First conceived by DC editor Jordan B. Gorfinkel, the Birds of Prey made their debut in Showcase ’96 #3, which saw Black Canary acting on information given to her by former Batgirl Barbara Gordon, now calling herself Oracle, a sort of information broker for superheroes. The duo worked well together, with Black Canary receiving mission briefs from an unseen Oracle in a clear homage to Charlie’s Angels. After starring in a handful of specials and miniseries, they were given their own ongoing series, where creators such as Chuck Dixon, Greg Land, Gail Simone, and Ed Benes helped shape them into one of DC’s premiere super-teams. Yet, in spite of their enduring popularity and adaptations in animation, TV, and film, DC has allowed the property to lay fallow, with no solo Birds of Prey comics published since 2021. All of that could be fixed, however, if DC took its cues for a new Birds of Prey series from a recent commission by artist Chris Mooneyham.
