A cute new piece of Pokémon fan art imagines Charmander as a Tamagotchi. Part of the original starter trio from Pokémon Red and Blue, Charmander is one of the most beloved and iconic creatures in Nintendo’s ever-growing line-up of Pokémon species and is instantly recognizable by its orange reptilian design and trademark fire-tipped tail. Because of this, Charmander has been the subject of plenty of adorable and creative fan works, such as a carved wooden box lid patterned after the endearing Charmander’s Pokémon card artwork.
Charmander’s debut in Pokémon Red and Blue coincided with a different type of creature-raising handheld game: Tamagotchi. These virtual pets tasked users with caring for a digital life form by pressing buttons and performing certain prompts to feed, play with, or clean up after it — and the poor little monster could grow sick or even die if the player left it unattended for too long. The initial Tamagotchi boom of the late 90s only lasted for a few years, but Bandai has continued to produce new variants based on popular characters like Star Wars’ R2-D2 and Boba Fett and games like Kingdom Hearts. In 2019, Nintendo and Bandai teamed up for an official Pokémon/Tamagotchi crossover centered around the adorable Eevee and its many different elemental evolution variants.
