The CW announced a fall premiere date for The Winchesters. A year after CW's flagship dark fantasy TV series, Supernatural, ended its wildly successful 15-season run, the announcement came that a spin-off prequel show called The Winchesters was already in development. Executive produced by Supernatural's Jensen Ackles (who is also the narrator) and his wife Danneel, with creative contribution from the mothership series writer Robbie Thompson, The Winchesters centers on John and Mary, parents of the original heroes, Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Ackles). In the new show, Meg Donnelly and Drake Rodger are playing the lead pair, with Nida Khurshid, Jonathan Fleites, Demetria McKinney, and Bianca Kajlich in key roles.
The CW had ordered a pilot for The Winchesters in February 2022. Ackles' involvement in the Supernatural prequel show and the original series' reputation contributed to the buzz around the spin-off. Still, it was uncertain if The Winchesters would eventually see the light of the day, considering that The CW was downsizing amid an ownership change and business strategy shift. The Winchesters, nevertheless, managed to stand out enough that in May 2022, it scored a series order, along with Walker: Independence and Gotham Knights.
