Showrunner Miguel Sapochnik explains how House of the Dragon’s Iron Throne got its swords. Sapcochnik and co-showrunner Ryan Condal’s Game of Thrones prequel series will debut on HBO Max next month. Where the flagship series was based on George R.R. Martin’s series of (unfinished) fantasy novels, A Song of Ice and Fire, House of the Dragon will take inspiration from Fire & Blood and novellas like The Princess and the Queen, which detail the history of the Targaryen dynasty.
House of the Dragon is set in Westeros nearly 200 years before Daenerys laid siege to King’s Landing, and follows House Targaryen at the height of its fiery power. It chronicles the events leading up to and during the Targaryen civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons, which was sparked by King Viserys breaking from tradition and naming his daughter heir to the Iron Throne. The prequel will look to right some of the wrongs of the original series, including Game of Thrones’ Iron Throne, which proved divisive among viewers. Not only were roughly 2,5000 swords used in the Game of Thrones spinoff show to build the seat of King’s Landing, but some of the prop swords are from other genre-similar releases.
