Although House of the Dragon showrunner Miguel Sapochnik couldn't confirm whether the Game of Thrones prequel series has been picked up for Season 2, at the LA premiere on Thursday, he said the show could «absolutely» become an anthology series.
«We've chosen a story that's almost like Star Wars: Episode IV. It's the New Hope. We can go backwards, we can go forwards,» Sapochnik told Entertainment Weekly. «There's a lot of opportunities there. I hope we've been given the opportunity to set up something… I think that's one of the interesting things about the Targaryens.»
But, Sapochnik added, House of the Dragon as we'll come to know it in Season 1 isn't a world they're looking to dispense with right away. During the show's Comic-Con panel, writer Ryan Condal said the writers are preparing a couple of different possible ways they can build on what we'll see play out in the coming weeks. In a recent The Hollywood Reporter interview, Condal and Sapochnik confirmed that because the show focuses on the lengthy and epic mythos of the Targaryen bloodline, the show will feature time jumps in the generational war.
House of the Dragon premieres August 21 on HBO.
There are four additional GoT spinoffs coming, including the Jon Snow series, which is tentatively titled «Snow.» The others include Ten Thousand Ships, Sea Snake, and The Hedge Knight/Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. There is no guarantee that any of the shows will actually be made, however, but scripts are being written.
