The kingdom of Hallownest in Hollow Knight is one ravaged by the Infection, brought on by the Radiance’s power. In the game, your quest is to stop this plague by either becoming a Vessel to contain it in the Hollow Knight’s stead or by eradicating it at its source by confronting the Radiance. During the game, you find out more information about Hallownest’s past through Lore Tablets and interactions with NPCs.

The Dreamers have a large role in Hallownest’s history and are integral to understanding the game’s overarching story and the period of time before the game takes place. They’re central to the Pale King’s plan to contain the Radiance, which is a catalyst for the game’s story.
Prior to the events of the game, the Pale King ascended to the throne, promising his new subjects an eternal kingdom where they could share in his wisdom. This led the Moth Tribe to betray their leader, the Radiance, to follow the Pale King instead.
Desperate to be remembered, the Radiance ended up creating the Infection that spread throughout Hallownest, penetrating the bugs’ dreams.
To stop the Radiance’s Infection from destroying his kingdom, the Pale King devised a plan to contain it.
As part of the Pale King’s plan, he enlisted the help of the Dreamers - Monomon the Teacher, Lurien the Watcher, and Herrah the Beast.
The Pale King started producing offspring with the White Lady to create a Pure Vessel capable of suppressing the Infection within its body. This Pure Vessel, eventually known as the Hollow Knight, was to be sealed within the Temple of the Black Egg under the protection of the Dreamers.
