While it’s not surprising that How I Met Your Mother featured plenty of break-ups throughout its 9-season series, it was peculiar that the show repeated one relatively uncommon story for every main character. How I Met Your Mother primarily followed the trials and tribulations of love for protagonist Ted Mosby as he searched for his future wife, with his best friends Marshall, Lily, Barney, and Robin experiencing their own shares of love and heartbreak along the way. With a group of characters that each had very different takes on love and life, the series was successful in exhibiting a wide array of relationship circumstances, whether they ended in happy marriages or sad breakups.
By the end of How I Met Your Mother, each of the main characters had gone through the wringer to find the loves of their lives. Lily and Marshall still ended up married and in love with children, while Barney and Robin got divorced before he found the true love of his life in his infant daughter, and she realized she still loved Ted. In a much more controversial ending, Ted’s wife Tracy died of an unknown illness six years before he tells his kids the story, with the final moments depicting Ted and Robin finally getting back together. However, before any of them reached their happy or bittersweet endings, the gang all experienced particularly sad breakups on How I Met Your Mother.
