WARNING: Spoilers ahead for HIMYF season 1!
How I Met Your Father season 2 can finally copy one of HIMYM’s best tricks to fill in the missing backstories of its characters. Aside from Robin, who was introduced to the gang’s lives in HIMYM’s pilot episode, each character in the original series had a great backstory for how they met the others in the group, which would be explored on-screen as time went on. To accomplish this, HIMYM's nine seasons continually utilized flashbacks to important stories in the characters’ lives that connected to their conflicts in the present day. So far, How I Met Your Father has yet to repeat this storytelling habit.
Unlike HIMYM, which had ample time to explore the characters’ past and present outside of the main conflict, How I Met Your Father season 1 was primarily focused on the current story at hand, only using present-day storylines and cuts to Future Sophie telling the tale in 2050. As such, the majority of the How I Met Your Father characters’ backstories before the pilot episode’s timeline have yet to be told, with season 1 only featuring one flashback to Sid accidentally killing his hamster as a child. The stories that took place before HIMYM’s timeline were arguably as important as those in the present day, but How I Met Your Father has yet to truly dive into these explorations of its characters.
