In the lower ranks of Overwatch’s competitive play, there is a common belief that gold medals determine who played well and who was letting their team down. A regular excuse gamers have when disaster strikes and a match is lost is that they had several gold medals, so they could not possibly be to blame for what went wrong. While gold medals are a fine enough way to determine individual performance, they do not cover every aspect of the game, meaning gamers should never be judged on whether they have gold medals or not.

A post from Overwatch player and Reddit user Gent1c showcased a toxic player in action, utilizing the gold medal excuse as many have done before. N0rthwind, the team’s Winston, called out the Tracer player named Conor for not having any gold medals. According to the Winston, the Tracer should have every gold medal apart from healing since they were using a Damage hero. The Winston then added that they had received all the gold medals, a move to make themselves look better and make Conor look worse.
At first glance, this seems like the usual Overwatch toxicity players see every so often. However, as mentioned by the post title, Conor did not have to say anything in response to N0rthwind because the Winston was clearly lying.
