A handheld Sega Mega Drive that plays original carts has been announced.
The Mega 95 from Hyperkin is an entirely portable system that will support all officially released cartridges for Sega’s system.
According to The Verge, the machine is based on the currently existing MegaRetroN HD Gaming Console from Hyperkin, which is also compatible with the Sega Mega Drive.
The Mega 95 will also come with a Nintendo Switch-like dock which will allow players to plug the machine into their television and connect additional controllers.
The machine can toggle between 16:9 and 4:3 aspect ratio an comes with a 5-inch display. The Mega 95 is claimed to have a battery life of around 10 hour from a full charge.
A release date or pricing information for the Mega 95 has yet to be confirmed by Hyperkin. The company currently sells several machines that emulate classic consoles, including a portable Super NES/ Super Famicom machine that retails for $119.99 / £119.99.
The Sega Mega Drive (known as the Sega Genesis in North America) was Sega’s 16-bit system, originally released in the late 80s in Japan.
It’s best known for its pack-in game, Sonic The Hedgehog. The sequel, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, would go on to be the system’s best-selling non-pack-in title.
It would later be surpassed in the 90s by the Sega Saturn, which found itself in stiff competition with Sony‘s PlayStation.
