After the inaugural crossover's success last summer, the Hellfire Gala is back and features a quick cameo of Gwenpool. A huge part of the fun for both the 2021 and 2022 Hellfire functions has been keeping an eye out for brief appearances from real-life celebrities and Marvel creators as well as other characters who managed to slip into the party. In the same way that red carpets have their winners and losers, one cameo at this year's Hellfire Gala tops all others: the Unbelievable Gwenpool.
As her name might suggest, Gwenpool is a bit of an oddball. Depending on which version of her origin story is the truth, she's a person from the real world who ended up on Earth 616. She maintains her awareness that she's now in a comic book universe and can therefore break the fourth wall and manipulate the form of the narrative that she's in. Therefore she made herself a mutant, so she can never worry about vanishing, since the X-Men always have an ongoing comic. Or, she's a powerful reality-warping mutant with enough cosmic awareness to understand she's in a comic, and due to past trauma arrived at the delusion that she originally came from the real world. Who knows how that story may finally get untangled, but no answer is needed to appreciate Gwenpool's cameo at the X-Men's Hellfire Gala.
