Veteran and celebrated film director Guillermo del Toro has commented on the moviemaking process, saying it's like «eating a sandwich of sh**.»
Speaking to the audience at the Annecy animation festival this week, del Toro said Hollywood is «geared toward grinding out sh** and destroying your art,» according to The Hollywood Reporter. He added that he continues to have his pitches rejected, despite being an accomplished, Oscar-winning director.
«They still say no to me. In the last two months, they said no to five of my projects. So it doesn't go away. Making movies is eating a sandwich of sh**,» he said. «There's always sh**, just sometimes you get a little more bread with yours. The rate of productivity against your efforts will remain frustratingly difficult, and frustratingly long. And you will always encounter assholes. But have faith in the stories you want to tell and wait until someone wants to buy them.»
Del Toro is known best for the movies Hellboy, Pan's Labyrinth, Pacific Rim, and The Shape of Water. That movie won Best Picture in 2018, and Del Toro was awarded Best Director for it. At this year's Academy Awards, Del Toro won his third Oscar for Pinocchio.
Years ago, del Toro was attached to direct The Hobbit before he dropped out and was replaced by Peter Jackson. His next project is an animated film adaptation of The Buried Giant for Netflix.
