Got $20,000 and access to a race track? Tesla's new Model S Plaid track package is coming soon with a top speed of 200mph (and the brakes, wheels, and tires to handle it).
Designed for the "ultimate track experience," the car delivers "high-speed stability, maximum cornering force, and repeatable stopping power during high-performance driving," according to its product page(Opens in a new window).
Unveiled in 2021, the Model S Plaid used the first production electric motors with carbon-sleeved rotors. It required Tesla to develop a new manufacturing machine to achieve, which—in theory—allowed it to maintain 1,000 horsepower up to 200mph in a motor small and light enough for a person to pick up.
Daredevil drivers, however, may have noticed that the car's actual speed topped out at around 163mph (or, with last year's "Track Mode" update, 175mph). Tesla, it turns out, was limiting its vehicle software, holding the Model S Plaid back from reaching its full potential due to insufficient brakes, Electrek reports(Opens in a new window).
The new track package, available in June, comes in at $15,000 for a carbon ceramic brake kit, or $20,000 for the brake kit plus wheel and tire components. You'll need to splash out for the ceramic brakes and proper wheels and tires to unlock the vehicle's top speed.
Tesla's Model S Plaid, which can travel 187 miles after 15 minutes at a Supercharger, also delivers on a promised zero-to-60mph time of 1.99 seconds, and can cover a quarter mile in 9.23 seconds.
