Google has announced(Opens in a new window) it is dropping support for Nest Secure and Dropcam home security system on April 8, 2024.
The company is unifying its smart home products so they can work with Google Home and Google Assistant, and in recent months it’s been dropping features that cannot be integrated. Dropcam and the Nest Secure system are just the latest to be chopped ahead of the launch of the Google Home app.
In a blog post, the tech giant said it would contact all eligible Nest Secure customers to offer them a complimentary “next-generation security system” from its long-term strategic partner ADT as long as it is $485 or less in value or a gift of $200 to use on the Google Store.
Last week, Google announced the ADT Self-Setup system, which boasts a smart home hub, two door or window sensors, a motion sensor, and one year of free monitoring. The ADT system is compatible with Google Home.
Meanwhile, Nest Aware subscribers will be able to purchase a free indoor, wired Nest Cam while non-subscribers will receive a 50% toward a Nest Cam.
Google added that US customers will be able to recycle their Nest Secure and Dropcam through a recycling partner.
The Dropcam, which had previously been called Dropcam HD, was released in 2012. It came under the search giant’s umbrella when Google-owned Nest bought it in 2014.
The company will also end Works with Nest on September 29, 2023, which was started back in 2014 as a means for third-party smart home devices to connect to Nest. After the September 29 deadline, Google said it would launch a script editor(Opens in a new window) that would let users continue to create home automation.
