Google is attempting to improve search for Gmail users by introducing artificial intelligence to the experience.
The mobile apps for both Google Workspace and personal Google accounts are being updated to add machine learning models(Opens in a new window).
Currently, when you use the search feature in the Gmail apps, the results are presented as a simple list in date order. With the introduction of artificial intelligence, a new section will appear at the top of the search results called "Top results."
The new AI component uses a combination of your most recent emails and "other relevant factors" to present the most likely emails you were searching for. Whether that proves to be the case will only become clear once you start using this new feature of search.
So why is Google injecting AI into Gmail? Apparently it's a "highly requested feature" by users, but it's also meant to speed up the process of finding emails or files in the mobile apps. The feature began rolling out to Gmail users of June 2, but Google says it could take 15 days or more before it's available to all users.
Ever since ChatGPT first appeared, Google has been playing catch-up with its efforts to take advantage of AI. That led to the introduction of Google Bard, a new version of Google Search and a concern it could kill the websites that feed it, and the resignation of the "Godfather of AI" from the company so he could freely speak out about the risks of AI.
