There’s a lot to love about open world gacha game Genshin Impact, but one of its most consistent elements is its soundtrack. So popular is the PS5 and PS4 game’s score that HoYoverse recently announced a series of global concerts, which will see the release’s music performed by live orchestras around the world.
Unfortunately, one of the key composers, Yu-Peng Chen (also known by his stage name Chen Zhiyi), has decided to leave the developer. According to a translated Weibo post, it sounds like he’s leaving on good terms. “After careful consideration for some time and several discussions with the company, I have chosen to leave miHoYo and the HOYO-MiX team to continue pursuing my music dreams,” he wrote.
He added: “I earnestly request everyone's understanding and respect for my decision, and in the future, I will continue to explore the path of music. I plan to release a new album of purely instrumental music next year, and specific plans will be announced in the future. I hope you will continue to support my creations. In the future, I will continue to explore Teyvat's wonders together with everyone as a Traveler!”
Obviously, this is a big loss for HoYoverse, but it has a multitude of composers on its HOYO-MiX team, and we’re confident it’ll continue to pump out great scores for Genshin Impact and its other games. In addition, it sounds like the door is not completely closed on Chen continuing to contribute to the game – albeit in perhaps a more limited, freelance capacity moving forwards.
