The Gears of War franchise was among the biggest and most popular properties in gaming in the Xbox 360 era, back when Epic Games delivered an excellent trilogy of revolution third person shooters that spawned an army of games trying to emulate its success with cover-based shooting mechanics, and though the series is obviously still a successful one, it’s fair to say that it’s lost some of the luster it once had.
According to Cliff Bleszinski, creator of the series and director of its original trilogy, the way to bring Gears of War back to the heights it used to be at is to hit the reset button. Speaking in an interview with Comic Book, Bleszinski said that he feels the Gears series needs a reboot in veil of 2018’s God of War, and that he would be happy to consult on such a project if it ever got greenlit.
“I believe Gears needs a little bit of a reboot, like God of War had,” Bleszinski said. “I’ve always said, [Microsoft Gaming CEO] Phil Spencer has my number, I’m happy to consult. Gears will always be near and dear to my heart.”
For now, it doesn’t seem like Microsoft or developers The Coalition have any plans for a Gears of War reboot. If leaks are to be believed, the studio is working on the next mainline instalment in the franchise, which will allegedly continue building on Gears 5’s experiments with semi-open world design.
