Though the first iPhone without a physical SIM card slot is expected to be the iPhone 15 Pro model, Steve Jobs, Apple's iconic co-founder, wanted the first iPhone to be SIM-free. Yes! The shocking revelation was made by "Father of iPod" Tony Fadell during the launch of Build: An Unorthodox Guide to Making Things Worth Making at the Computer History Museum. He shared that Jobs wanted Apple to use CDMA technology in the iPhone to connect to cell towers, instead of GSM. And Apple did launch a CDMA version of the iPhone 4 but the SIM tray was also there.
