Amid all the handwringing over Microsoft’s proposed $69 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard, the background story is that Call of Duty has become a bit of a basket case. The series is still infinitely popular, of course – although it is shedding numbers – but in chasing Fortnite’s crown it’s started doing strange crossovers with celebrities that don’t really make sense in a super-serious military setting. The latest example? Kevin Durant.
For those of you who don’t follow the NBA, Durant currently plays for the Phoenix Suns and is considered one of the better power forwards on the planet, specifically for his two back-to-back MVP performances for the Golden State Warriors in 2017 and 2018.
Durant will be available in both Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0 from 10th May, alongside the series’ Season 3 Reloaded update. In addition to the skin, you’ll also get a couple of weapon blueprints – the ‘Reap This’ AR and ‘Easy Money’ sniper – as well as a finishing move, charm, loading screen, sticker, and animated emblem.
Personally, we just find this whole initiative from Call of Duty strange. Fortnite’s cartoon aesthetic means it can get away with including pretty much any character, but we’re not convinced Activision’s ultra-realistic art style can make it work. One other thing to note is that in real life Durant is over two metres tall, so heaven knows what this means for game balance because we assume he’s going to have a huge hit box.
