The Final Fantasy series is what saved Square in the ’80s and has been the go-to for Square-Enix for decades alongside Dragon Quest. The first six entries were iconic eight and 16-bit turn-based RPGs, with the sixth entry being one that is still regarded as one of the finest examples of the genre to this day. In 2020, they were brought to mobile devices and in 2021, they hit PC with a revamped graphical style that aimed to bring the pixel art style back with higher-fidelity modeling for newer displays instead of the prior mobile versions’ smeary artwork.
The new versions fix that up with redrawn art and a better pixel art-based font instead of the generic word processor font used in the original release. Each individual game is $17.99 or you can get the bundle for $74.99. The improvements made to the console versions will be rolled out on the PC version at some point, which is definitely the best overall value in the long-run as those versions have gone on sale quite a bit – sometimes down to half-off, and they’re all Steam Deck-playable.
