Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth has Red XIII answer a question that I don't think many of us were asking in the first place - what does Cloud Strife smell like?
With how much Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth focuses on Cloud's damaged mental state and messed up memories, it's safe to say that players have gotten to know him a lot more closely (or at least who he thinks he is) than they did in Final Fantasy 7 Remake. It's not just Cloud's personality that we're learning more about, though, as Red XIII has been kind enough to tell us what the sullen SOLDIER smells like.
As highlighted by PlayStation UK, one mission in the game features Cloud trailing behind Red XIII as he trails someone by following their scent. While doing so, he explains his sense of smell is much better than any human's and that "bodily secretions are as strong as any perfume", allowing him to track anyone from a single sniff of their clothing.
This (somewhat foolishly) causes Cloud to ask Red XIII what he smells like, which causes him to say, "Like a man who's killed his fair share of fiends, I suppose". Despite not being the best at social cues, Cloud instantly sees through what Red is saying, and replies with, "Like blood and s**t then".
In response, Red XIII sheepishly says, "Not literal s**t, no...", although his delivery implies that Cloud might be in need of a shower at some point during his adventure. Cloud doesn't end up replying to what Red has said, but if you were ever wondering what one of gaming's most iconic characters smells like, there you have it. You know what they say about never meeting your heroes.
Cloud isn't the only thing that Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth reveals the smell of, as game director Naoki Hamaguchi previously claimed that Chocobos (which are notoriously stinky in the world of Final Fantasy) smell like horses .
It's certainly a far cry from how Final Fantasy has described the smell of some of its other characters. Crisis Core famously detailed just how much work Sephiroth puts into
