The next mainline Final Fantasy will be released next summer and the new trailer gives the first proper look at the combat and graphics.
It’s clear no one at Sony either knew or cared that it’s a double bank holiday weekend in the UK at the moment, as Thursday night’s State of Play was their most significant so far this year.
It wasn’t quite an E3 equivalent, as there were very few first party games shown, just Horizon: Call Of The Mountain, but you did get first looks at gameplay for Resident Evil 4, Street Fighter 6, and… Final Fantasy 16.
There was a trailer before, for Square Enix’s new mainline sequel, but this one showed off extended shots of gameplay, which seemed to confirm that the game’s setting is basically Game of Thrones but with classic Final Fantasy summons creatures.
As you’d expect of any Final Fantasy game, even the trailer was filled with confusing nomenclature, with the summons actually referred to as Eikons within the game’s narrative.
The trailer music chants out their names too: Phoenix, Titan, Garuda, Ramuh, Shiva, Odin, Bahamut, and Ifrit – like a kind of edgier version of Pokémon.
The bad guys seem to be called Dominants and while the storytelling does seem to take itself a bit too seriously the gameplay looks a lot of fun, although old school fans may baulk at the fact that the combat seems to be entirely action-based.

Apart from anything else, Final Fantasy 16 is a clearly a very technically impressive game, but then it’s a PlayStation 5 exclusive – with no word of even a PC version.
