One of Final Fantasy XIV's most beloved characters is Hildibrand Helidor Maximilian Manderville, and after years of anticipation, he's coming back in patch 6.15. Created by Naoki Yoshida after he was given control over the MMORPG, Hildibrand was created to facilitate the quest that unlocked private inn rooms in 1.0 for the player. Because Yoshida planned to reboot the entire game anyway, and taking into account that such a gamble might not pay off due to the game's abysmal reputation, Yoshida made Hildibrand to be little more than a joke.
However, Hildibrand became so adored that even after the game rebooted, Yoshida brought him back in A Realm Reborn. Each successive expansion would include a Hildibrand questline in its post-expansion content, where the Warrior Of Light has to help the dimwitted detective solve yet another ridiculous series of crimes. That was, until Final Fantasy XIV's well-reviewed Shadowbringers, expansion, where Hildibrand was nowhere to be seen.

This was disconcerting for those who had gotten used to seeing Hildibrand once every expansion. Every time the main story in an expansion wrapped up and the post-expansion content began, Hildibrand was always the first questline to appear. He and his bomb-loving assistant Nashu, occasionally joined by his father and mother, Godbert and Julyan Manderville, would drag the Warrior Of Light on madcap adventures across Eorzea, solving mysteries that were as strange as the man solving them. Shelving him for an entire expansion was fairly baffling.
