Viewers have watched Ethan Plath from Welcome to Plathville gradually change from a happy-go-lucky and naive young man to a shell of a person. His sunny disposition and positive outlook on life quickly shifted to anger and frustration. The stress Ethan experienced from the fallout with his parents and the struggles within his marriage is starting to take a toll on him.
Kim and Barry Plath described Ethan growing up as the fun one in the family that loved to make everyone laugh. Ethan’s family was always close, and he has a very tight bond with his siblings. His relationship with his parents became strained when they would no longer allow him and his wife Olivia Plath to visit his siblings when they were not present. Olivia showed Ethan a life outside of what he grew up with and taught him to think for himself. This was an issue for Kim and Barry, and they did not want the couple to influence the younger children. That was only the beginning, as the tension between Olivia and his parents continued to grow. Olivia did not feel accepted by Kim and Barry, therefore struggling to have a relationship with them.

At the end of season 3, Ethan and Olivia concluded that putting distance between them and his parents would be best.
