Nintendo’s occasional retro battle royale experiments continue with F-Zero 99, launching later today exclusively for active Nintendo Switch Online subscribers.
F-Zero 99 is exactly what it sounds like: a 99-player version of F-Zero where the only way to win is to be the last racer standing. Using the familiar racing of F-Zero, if you crash with the energy walls, yeet yourself off the course with a ramp, or bash into other racers, then you’ll whittle away your energy levels and cause yourself to blow up, knocking you out of the game.
However, you do have something in your bag of tricks that you won’t have had in the SNES original, as you can trigger a jump up to the Skyway, a private blue shortcut road that runs above the main track. This will give you a good chance to get back toward the front of the pack.
The one question that fans will have is how long this particular game will last. While Tetris 99 is still up and running, Super Mario Bros. 35 was a limited-time game, while Pac-Man 99 will be shutting down next month.
