Several playable characters have been spotted in the latest trailer for . The trailer, premiering at the PlayStation State of Play event on September 14, 2023, put much of the game's cast of characters on display while also revealing's release date. Many of them have already appeared in, the first chapter of the revival trilogy, and will be reprising their roles in. Others are debuting in the remake trilogy for the first time, and still others were present in but couldn't be controlled by the player.
The original had nine playable characters who, once unlocked, could rotate in and out of the party at will. was a little more limited, with just four playable characters available during the main campaign. A fifth character was available in the final chapters, but could only be controlled by AI. However, the version of the game included a bonus chapter with a fifth playable character. As the main protagonist of, it's no surprise to see Cloud leading the cast of. In the first chapter of the story, Cloud shows up in Midgar claiming to be a SOLDIER First Class. With the help of his childhood friend Tifa, he finds a job with the eco-terrorist organization Avalanche, and what starts as a one-time gig turns into a lifelong partnership. Cloud gets Avalanche tangled up in the affairs of the powerfully furious Sephiroth, a fellow SOLDIER. In the original as in, Cloud wields the iconic Buster Sword, an enormous, heavy weapon that can be used to send shockwaves through enemy groups.
