As of July 14, Xbox players can access several classic Bethesda and id Software games for free. In recent years, Microsoft has significantly expanded its affiliated game studios - in 2021, it bought the game publisher ZeniMax Media, which in turn owns developers such as Tango Gameworks (The Evil Within, Ghostwire: Tokyo), Arkane Studios (Dishonored), id Software (Doom, Quake, Wolfenstein) and Bethesda Game Studios (The Elder Scrolls, Fallout). A number of classic Bethesda and id Software games are now available to players who are subscribed to the Xbox Insider Program, a beta testing platform that encourages people to screen games that are yet to be released on the Microsoft store for bugs.
RPG powerhouse Bethesda Game Studios and shooter specialist id Software are both venerated studios that have historically contributed to technological innovation in games. id Software, founded in 1991, was one of the original studios to popularize PC gaming and is generally regarded to have invented the FPS genre, with Wolfenstein 3D being the first ever FPS game, and Doom bringing PC games into the mainstream. Meanwhile, Bethesda Game Studios is most well-known for The Elder Scrolls and Fallout franchises, the scope of which have set the standard for open-world role-playing games today.

Those who are members of the Xbox Insider Program can now play The Elder Scrolls: Arena, TES: Daggerfall, and Quake Champions for free.
