As the road to Judgement Day heats up at Marvel Comics the Free Comic Book Day 2022: Avengers/X-Men special gives more clarity to the Eternals upcoming war with the X-Men, explaining the major mutant retcon in more detail. For months now it seemed as though Judgement Day would rewrite the mutant race's history, making them descended from Deviants as opposed to humans, but now it seems like the excessive deviation that will put the Eternals against the X-Men is their newly created Resurrection Protocols.
The Resurrection Protocols is a process by which The Five, five specific mutants revered in Krakoan society that use a «circuit» of their powers, are able to revive any dead mutant into a newly cloned body, with their entire consciousness and essence placed in the husk using Cerebro. This technology has been available to the mutants for over two years now, since 2019's House of X/Powers of X. Despite Cyclops threatening to expose this great secret, the X-Men and Quiet Council have been able to keep their immortality a secret from everyone else… until now.

FCBD 2022: Avengers/X-Men #1, specifically the story «Of Deviation and Mutation» — written by Kieron Gillen with art by Dustin Weaver and Marte Garcia — starts millions of years ago, with the former leader of the Eternals Uranos contemplating the slaughter of a group of «thinky monkeys» who have mutated and developed a hive mind, while Odin of the BC Avengers watches on.
