Andor showrunner Tony Gilroy has teased the extent of Genevieve O'Reilly's Mon Mothma character's story in the series, which will follow Diego Luna's Cassian Andor. The Disney+ show will see Luna reprise the role of the Rebel Alliance operative following his franchise debut in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. O'Reilly has portrayed the Rebel leader Mothma in animation and live-action since 2005.
Making her debut in 1983's Star Wars: Return of the Jedi and originally portrayed by Caroline Blakiston, Mon Mothma was the former senator of Chandrila who would help form the Rebel Alliance and have a hand in the destruction of both Death Stars. Despite having her original appearance as a younger Mon Mothma in the final days of the Republic cut from Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, O'Reilly finally properly appeared as the character in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, overseeing the then-struggling alliance. As part of a showcase of Star Wars' television offerings, O'Reilly joined other Star Wars stars for a photoshoot, while Andor's showrunner shared some insight on Mon Mothma's presence in the Rogue One tie-in series.

As part of Vanity Fair's feature on Lucasfilm's current slate of Star Wars series, O'Reilly joined Andor co-star Luna alongside fellow Star Wars actors including Ewan McGregor, Pedro Pascal, Rosario Dawson, Moses Ingram, and Hayden Christensen for a photoshoot taken by Annie Leibovitz featuring each star in their respective character's costume.
