A Reddit theory about Disney’s Encanto explains how Mirabel’s secret magical gift saved the Casita where she lived. Of course, Encanto's magic and joy have a surprisingly dark edge. This is because the magic itself appeared in response to a tragedy. In the hope of leading others to a better, safer life, Abuela Alma, Abuelo Pedro, and their three children left the town where they lived in Colombia following a violent uprising. The exception to this was Mirabel Madrigal, who did not receive a gift on her fifth birthday. Instead, when she touched the doorknob to what was supposed to be her new room in Casita, the door disappeared, leaving Mirabel with no gift to share.
