Abuelo Pedro’s death already serves as one of the most emotionally powerful scenes in Encanto, but the original circumstances would have been too tragic for the animated film. When writing the Oscar-winning film, Encanto’s most heartbreaking scene—Pedro’s death—featured many different versions before the final draft was executed. Like the movie itself, the scene in which Encanto’s miracle is born was perfectly executed, but it may have overdone itself had it kept the early version.
Toward Encanto’s climactic ending, Abuela Alma tells Mirabel her love story with Pedro, with the film depicting flashbacks to his death. Only hours after Encanto’s triplets Julieta, Pepa, and Bruno were born, Abuela and Pedro were forced to flee their home village as Colombia’s Thousand Days’ War broke out. As Alma carried the three babies across the river in her arms, Pedro was unable to pass, being murdered by the conquerors who drove them from their home. In the midst of Pedro’s death, Abuela’s candle came to life as it gifted the babies, and future Madrigals, their magical powers.

While Encanto’s tragic flashback scene is still the emotional crux of Abuela and Mirabel’s story, an early draft of Pedro’s death was all the more heartbreaking. According to Encanto director Jared Bush, one version of Pedro’s death would have seen him die at the exact moment that Abuela gave birth to the triplets – all at the river. If this version had remained, Pedro’s story would have become increasingly tragic by revealing that he was never able to meet his children before sacrificing his life for theirs.
