Despite all changes he’s made, it looks like Elon Musk isn’t happy with the current state of Twitter, also known as X, and is conceding the social media site might fail.
“The sad truth is that there are no great ‘social networks’ right now,” Musk tweeted on Saturday, nearly a year after he paid $44 billion to buy the social media platform. “We may fail, as so many have predicted, but we will try our best to make there be at least one."
Musk made the comment after facing backlash for saying he planned to remove the block account function on Twitter, an important tool many users rely on to stop harassment and stalking.
Musk later clarified that he wants to remove the block function in favor of a stronger mute account button “by making anything posted by the muted account invisible to you.” Nevertheless, the Tesla CEO faced pushback from critics like actor James Woods, who threatened to quit the site over the potential removal of the block-account function.
“If @elonmusk removes the ability to block concerted harassment by trolls or organized political entities, how will ‘X’ be any different from Jack Dorsey’s horrid Twitter?” Woods wrote, later adding: “The man I thought was a defender of free speech is just another greedy capitalist. Disappointing, but not surprising.”
In response, Musk told Woods to delete his account.
The other persistent issue facing Twitter is bugs: On Saturday, a new glitch was uncovered that’s been deleting images uploaded to the social media platform between 2011 and 2014. As a result, Musk may be feeling less confident in Twitter’s prospects when the social media platform continues to struggle to attract advertisers, the company’s key revenue source.
