While exploring The Lands Between in Elden Ring, players will undoubtedly notice the heavily guarded, giant carriages pulled by Trolls. On the surface, they appear to be guarded supply trains carrying loot, which is only partly true. The player can find some valuable weapons in the treasure chests hiding in the back of the carriage. However, a deep dive into the lore reveals that there is more to these odd processions, and like many things in Elden Ring, it isn’t the happiest of stories.
These carriages are transporting coffins, and there are thirteen of them in the game. Four are pulled by Trolls chained to the carriage with a spike impaled through their chest. These can be found in Limgrave, Liurnia, Altus Plateau, and Consecrated Snowfield. Perhaps the most apparent evidence identifying them as coffins is the Abandoned Coffin Site of Grace. Here, the player finds a hill covered in these broken-down carriages.

The coffins are likely headed to one of the many catacombs that can be discovered throughout The Lands Between, but why the chained Trolls lead the convoy is a darker story. According to lore, Elden Ring's Queen Marika led a war prior to the game's events against the Giants in the north, the last of which is the Fire Giant boss. The Troll’s Golden Sword hints that Marika’s victory was achieved with the help of several other factions, including a group of lesser Giants, aka the Trolls, who betrayed the Giants. Instead of rewarding them, Marika and her allies hunted the surviving Trolls and took them as unwilling servants.
