The Tonic of Forgetfulness is a potion that promises to «banish distress and bitter memories.» It was originally gifted by Rykard, Lord of Blasphemy to his consort Lady Tanith, in order to allow her to forget his descent into heresy and monstrosity. However, she refused to take the Tonic as it would cause her to forget her love of Rykard and can offer it to the player instead.

Lady Tanith is the proprietress of Volcano Manor, and players will have to journey to the far northwest of Elden Ring's map to find her. Advancing Lady Tanith's quest to the point that she hands over the Tonic of Forgetfulness requires players to have met and helped her adopted daughter Rya.
Although players can encounter Rya earlier in the game, the important thing is to speak to her after beginning Lady Tanith's Tarnished-hunting quest.
It's vital that players don't advance too quickly through Lady Tanith's quest, and players will need to go back to speak to Rya between each step. The quest involves three assassinations, but completing them all will lock players out of gaining the Tonic of Forgetfulness.
