It might be hard to recall but once upon a time Demon's Souls and Dark Souls were considered rather niche. These games developed a cultish following, a devoted player base that breathed, in slightly strained and eye-veined tones, to anyone who would listen about them.
Steadily, the fanbase for Dark Souls grew, morphing into something bigger. Word spread about this firm but fair game, which taught you how to play. Its developer FromSoftware gained notoriety, for making difficult games that passionate fans were eager to qualify by insisting it was fair. A masterpiece then arrived in the form of Bloodborne. And yet... FromSoftware had still not yet quite hit the mainstream. Then, with Elden Ring, a behemoth was born.

Few could've predicted just how well Elden Ring would sell. Its success took FromSoftware and its publisher, Bandai Namco, by surprise. It went on to cast many of its competitors in the shade, the year it came out, leaving such big names as God of War Ragnarok, Horizon Forbidden West, FIFA 23, Pokemon Scarlet & Violet in its wake. It was in fact 2022's second-biggest selling title, with only Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 above it.
Bandai Namco has updated its sales numbers for Elden Ring and they are impressive. In its latest briefing for its financial results for the last fiscal year (thanks ResetEra), Bandai Namco revealed that Elden Ring has worldwide sales reaching 20.5 million. This is a very strong showing. To put it into context, fellow 2022 release Horizon Forbidden West has sold 8.4 million units, which is less than half what Elden Ring has managed, while still being considered a great success since Aloy's second outing is one of the PS5's best-selling
