Dragon Ball fans across the globe are currently in mourning, as it's been announced that legendary manga creator Akira Toriyama has passed away at just age 68. According to an official post via the Dragon Ball Twitter account, Toriyama passed away on March 1 earlier this month due to "acute subdural hematoma". It was also explained that a funeral service was held with close family earlier this week, and that flowers and gifts will not be accepted at this time out of respect for Toriyama's family.
It has not yet been decided when or whether a future commemorative gathering will take place for Toriyama, but those currently behind the Dragon Ball manga will inform fans that wish to pay respect to the man of any future plans that may arise. Finally, the post thanks fans for their understanding during this difficult time, and those that knew Toriyama are grateful for their "kindness during his lifetime".
Being the creator of the original Dragon Ball manga, Toriyama's work has had an impact on millions over his long and illustrious 45-year career, having created one of the most popular manga and anime series in the history of both mediums. He's inspired countless people to pursue their own works of art, and has even had a hand in the video game industry, having been a character designer for the Dragon Quest series, as well as beloved JRPGs such as Chrono Trigger and Blue Dragon.
You only have a brief glimpse on social media to see just how much Toriyama was respected and adored by his fans, with hundreds of thousands of people offering their condolences and explaining just how much of an impact his work has had on their lives, and will continue to have for the foreseeable future.
With both the anime Dragon Ball Daima and the video game Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero still scheduled for release at some point in 2024, we'll still be enjoying Toriyama's work now and in the future. Hopefully, we'll get a tribute of some kind in one of these projects, which he more than deserves.
