The characters in the DC series Doom Patrol boast a wide range of strange and fascinating abilities, which reflect their respective traumas and personalities and allow them to be superheroes in a unique way. The handling of these abilities in the show has set a precedent for other live-action superhero media, and Kamala Khan’s upcoming MCU debut in Ms. Marvel should take note, particularly from one of Doom Patrol’s most fascinating characters, Rita Farr, otherwise known as Elasti-Woman.
Rita is a former Hollywood star who was exposed to a toxic gas that altered her cellular structure. As a result, she is able to stretch her body in unimaginable ways, but the gas also caused her body to deform. Having relied on her looks for the majority of her life, this deformation haunted her for years — until she joined the Doom Patrol on a mission to find their leader and learned how to control her powers. Alongside her ability for elasticity, Rita’s physiology has stalled the aging process, and she is also capable of changing the size of her body to become a giant.
