Christopher Eccleston has teased his role in Doctor Who's 60th anniversary which will come in the form of an audio drama. Eccleston is a English actor who portrayed the ninth incarnation of the Doctor in the BBC sci-fi series. In fact, Eccleston kicked off the show's modern stage, being the first to portray the Doctor in the 2005 reboot after the show was canceled back in 1989. However, he only portrayed the Doctor for one season and ultimately left the franchise because he didn't enjoy its environment or culture.
Ever since his departure from the franchise in 2005, Eccleston has had a tense relationship with Doctor Who. For many years, he refused to associate with it at all, claiming that BBC had blackmailed him and forced him take up acting in America after he left the show. He has refused to return in any capacity to the TV show, even declining an appearance in Doctor Who's 50th-anniversary special. However, the estrangement seems to be lessening and since 2021, he has returned to the role of the 9th Doctor in audio dramas produced by Big Fish.
