GenCon 2023 has come and gone, but one of the highlights of my weekend was interviewing Disney Lorcana designer Ryan Miller. During our 20 minute interview, Ryan and I chatted about how Lorcana came to be, some of his favourite cards, and what the actual targeted demographic was for the game (hint, it wasn’t kids!)

Disney Lorcana was code named Project Famous during production since the idea of the trading card game was first discussed at a bar in Los Angeles called The Famous Bar.
The target demographic for Disney Lorcana was 20-35 year olds, but Ryan did say there was a goal to make the game accessible to a wider audience.
Two of Ryan’s favourite cards / favourite cards to work on are Grandma Tala and Tomatoa – story telling was a huge part of creating the experience. That is why, for example, Ariel on Legs cannot sing songs, since she has sold her voice to Ursula!
Ryan said (understandably) he took advantage of his power to get cards from both Treasure Planet and Sword and the Stone into the game!
