Discord wants to free up the time of admins and mods by making most moderation tasks happen automatically using a new AutoMod tool(Opens in a new window).
AutoMod is a collection of content filters capable of preventing unwanted messages from appearing across all #text-channels, but also within Threads and Text Chat in Voice channels. Importantly, it can do this without any human help, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, freeing up more time for us humans to interact rather than dealing with undesirable content.
The functionality extends to automatically handling timeouts for users who attempt to post harmful content, and the option for select team members to receive alerts telling them about flagged messages. That way, if a mistake has been made it can be quickly rectified. On the other hand, such alerts should act as a welcome reminder that this content doesn't appear on your Discord anymore.
AutoMod offers three custom keyword filters so it's possible to determine what gets flagged while still allowing the tool to work automatically. The filters include the ability to flag words, specific phrases, and even misspelled words as a custom rule, or wildcards for words or phrases buried within other words.
Discord also provides a number of predefined word lists to take advantage of, which contain common words most people never want to see appearing in public messages.
If you're an admin or moderator on a Discord server and want to play with the options, simply navigate to Server Settings > Content Moderation to access the list of filters and rules. It's possible to tweak the settings on both desktop or mobile devices, and if you need some help there's a detailed AutoMod FAQ(Opens in a new window) available to peruse.
